When working in Excel, often times you'll want to be pulling a lot of information automatically from dates. There are a couple different methods of extracting year information that you should know.

Excel has a built-in function that will automatically extract the year from any date. This will give us the second column, highlighted in table above.


It's as easy as using the YEAR function, and dropping in the date that you wish to extract the year out of.

= YEAR(date)

What if we instead want to return a two digit year? We can use a simple formula to accomplish this as well.


To return the shortened year numbers as seen in the highlighted column in the table above, we can use the following formula:

= TEXT(date,"YY")

The TEXT function will automatically convert any input date (hardcoded or a cell reference) into multiple formats as specified by the text in-between quotations marks in the second argument. In this case, since we want a 2 digit year, we want to use "YY" rather than "YYYY" (which would give us 4 digits).
